This weekend and next weekend the Uwharrie Players present The Curious Savage. The play will run February 19-21 and again February 26-27 at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center. Friday and Saturday performances will start at 7:30 pm and the Sunday matinees will begin at 3 pm. Written by John Patrick, this is a comedic play about Ethel P. Savage, an elderly woman whose husband recently died and left her approximately ten million dollars. Contrasting the kindness and loyalty of psychiatric patients with the avarice and vanity of “respectable” public figures, it calls into question conventional definitions of sanity while lampooning celebrity culture. The play was first produced in New York by the Theatre Guild and Lewis & Young at the Martin Beck Theatre and opened October 24, 1950. This local production will feature veteran performers and theatrical newcomers. Nancy Cottingham takes the leading role of Ethel Savage. Making her fifth appearance with the Uwharrie Players, Cottingham has been active with community theater groups in Concord and Fort Mill, South Carolina. Roger Thomas, Debbie Williams and Audrey Barringer portray Ethel Savage’s family members. Advance tickets at discount prices are available at several locations around Albemarle and Stanly County.
